How do dreamwidth?

I'm just trying to figure things out right now, but maaaaaybe I'll end up over here more full time. I don't really know how to navigate this type of website (I was never on LJ, but I was on others) and am kind of at a loss for how to discover things; hence my page being a whole one (1) post long. Anyway, we'll see how this goes. I don't even really know the etiquette for this site, having come straight from tumblr, and that always makes things hard.

Etiquette? Just dive right in. Browse Latest Things to get a snapshot of what kind of activity happens here (a lot of fandom communities and their fanfic challenges), otherwise there seems to be a bunch of authors, a few poets and Russians posting news related things. Find any journal and at the top of the page there will be "reading" links which will show you the latest posts from journals, communities and RSS feeds that that journal finds interesting, and if they've chipped some money to Dreamwidth, they also have a "Network" page (which you can see even without paying) which shows a bunch of recent posts from journals, communities and RSS feeds that people in the "reading" link have subscribed to.

Dreamwidth is small and not everyone posts stuff. You will probably see much of the same people time and again.
